Opening night for the premiere of My Heart is the Drum was this past Saturday, and it takes months of rehearsal to put together a play or musical. You have; the actors and/or dancers, the tech crew, and the costume crew. But not many shows have the creators of the production there with them.

Reporter Raven Fulton has the story.

The week before My Heart is the Drum opened, it was tech week. The week where everything comes together on stage. The lighting. The Dialogue. And the music.

Phillip Palmer, the composer, arranger and creator and Stacey Luftig, the lyricist, watch tentatively during the first night of tech week, as their work unfolds on stage for the first time.

[Stand up] When you think “musical” what image pops into your head? Mostly, Actors on a bright stage singing and dancing. But it’s not just about that. Sometimes people forget that there’s a story behind the music.

Jennie Redling, the playwright, the woman behind the words, arrived to fridged Ohio two days before opening night, ready to see and hear her words spoken on stage after 9 years of creation.

INTERVIEW SOT

The creators of My Heart is the Drum will continue to watch their story beat to the rhythm of the drum and listen to the audience moving in their seats of the E. Turner Stump Theatre as the show continues to  run until March 1st.
